An Arizona State University college student, Mara Daffron, 19, was hospitalized after being randomly stabbed by classmate Kaci Sloan on September 19 at ASU’s Glendale campus. Sloan, who allegedly premeditated the attack, stabbed Daffron twice in front of other students, targeting her because she seemed like an “easier” victim. Another student, Matthew McCormick, intervened, preventing a third stabbing and subduing Sloan until authorities arrived.

Daffron was rushed to Banner Thunderbird Hospital for surgery on her tricep and spleen and is now recovering at home. Police found notes in Sloan’s possession indicating she had planned the attack the night before, debating between two potential victims. Sloan has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and is being held on a $250,000 bond.
