Francois Barre, a 30-year-old Columbia University graduate student, allegedly told a 19-year-old student “I know you want this” as he sexually assaulted her in their building, prosecutors revealed in Manhattan criminal court on Saturday. Barre offered to help her with groceries but instead followed her into her apartment.

Once inside, Barre allegedly kissed her forcefully on the neck, backed her against the wall, and rubbed against her so she couldn’t move, according to Assistant District Attorney Meera Patel. He then groped her buttocks and breasts under her dress despite her attempts to push him away.

Barre was caught on security camera entering and leaving the apartment building. After the victim reported the incident, authorities arrested Barre and charged him with sexual assault and forcible touching. Prosecutors requested an order of protection and $20,000 cash bail.

Barre’s defense attorney, Amanda Barfield, stated that Barre, who recently completed a graduate degree in international relations, plans to leave the building soon. He has forfeited his French passport and requested supervised leave, saying he “wants to move out quickly.”

According to the NYPD, rape has increased in New York City by 12% in 2024, with 148 reports already this year compared to 132 in 2023. It remains unclear if Barre and the victim had any prior communication or if he will face jail time if convicted.
