Disney’s recent trailer for the live-action Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remake has sparked widespread discontent. Released on YouTube, the trailer garnered an overwhelming 735,000 downvotes compared to a mere 69,000 upvotes out of nearly 6.7 million views. This stark contrast is unprecedented, even surpassing the divisive response to Disney’s 2023 flop The Marvels, which had a more balanced ratio of likes to dislikes.
The backlash is rooted in controversies surrounding the film. Lead actress Rachel Zegler’s criticisms of the original 1937 classic as “sexist and dated” alienated many fans. Zegler’s remarks, promising an “empowered” version of Snow White devoid of Prince Charming, have only fueled the negative reception.
Further aggravating the situation was Disney’s decision to appease actor Peter Dinklage, who publicly denounced the idea of casting dwarfs as the Seven Dwarfs. Disney responded by replacing the dwarfs with “Magical Beings,” a move that sparked widespread mockery when photos leaked online.
Realizing the potential box office disaster, Disney delayed the film’s release from March 2024 to March 2025 and retooled the movie at great cost. The resulting trailer, however, has done little to assuage concerns. Many viewers found it implausible that Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen would be jealous of Zegler’s Snow White, and a leaked scene depicting Snow White instructing the dwarfs to clean up further alienated fans. Critics on social media labeled the new Snow White as an “entitled brat” and ridiculed the trailer for its perceived lack of authenticity and respect for the original.
The YouTube comments reflect the widespread dissatisfaction:
•“So you’re telling me that Magic Mirror is going to choose Rachel Zegler over Gal Gadot as the ‘fairest of them all’? That’s some fairy tale!”
•“Snow White (2025): ‘I don’t need any man.’ The Prince: ‘That’s fine. I’m here for your stepmom.’”
•“Snow White breaks into a stranger’s house and INSTRUCTS and OVERSEES them cleaning their house.”
With such strong backlash, the film faces an uncertain future at the box office.
