An 18-year-old suspect was hospitalized with a gunshot wound, while a 17-year-old suspect was arrested after a confrontation with a homeowner in Columbus, Georgia. The homeowner confronted the suspects accused of breaking into cars in the Benning Hills area. When one suspect advanced toward the homeowner, the homeowner opened fire.

Police reported officers were dispatched at 12:01 a.m. Saturday to the scene, where they later found another pistol and over 40 grams of marijuana in the suspects’ vehicle. Both suspects fled to a nearby gas station, where 18-year-old Deonte Smith entered with a gunshot wound. Smith was hospitalized and listed in stable condition. The 17-year-old suspect was arrested with a stolen firearm and faces multiple charges, including entering auto and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Authorities obtained warrants for Smith, who will be charged upon his release from the hospital. Public reaction to the incident was supportive of the homeowner’s actions.
