A new report from GLAAD revealed a decline in LGBTQ representation in films for 2023. According to GLAAD’s 2024 Studio Responsibility Index, only 70 of 256 films tracked featured LGBTQ characters, down from 100 LGBTQ characters across 350 movies in 2022. The report evaluated representation from major studios like Netflix, Disney, Amazon, and Warner Bros., and gave most studios “insufficient” or “fair” ratings.

The report expressed disappointment in the reduced presence of LGBTQ characters, particularly in family entertainment. GLAAD called for increased representation in the kids and family genre, noting that studios offered fewer LGBTQ stories in this category compared to previous years.

On television, GLAAD also reported a decrease in LGBTQ characters, with TV show representation dropping by 36% on primetime series and 45% on cable shows. Despite these reductions, the report acknowledged that LGBTQ representation in both films and television has seen significant growth since the first Studio Responsibility Index was published in 2013.
