Former California State Sen. Gloria Romero has officially left the Democrat Party, stating it no longer represents the values she once championed. On Wednesday, Romero, who previously served as Senate Majority Leader, revealed she had changed her voter registration to the Republican Party.

“I am now one of the many long-time Democrats, including key groups like Latinos, who are leaving the Democratic Party,” Romero said. “This is not the party I once championed, and I no longer recognize it. Today, at sunrise, I changed my registration to Republican, which under Donald Trump has become the party of the working class.”

During an interview with Fox News, Romero criticized Vice President Kamala Harris’s record on education during her tenure as California’s attorney general. Romero pointed out Harris’s failed attempt to pass a bill that would have jailed mothers of truant children and accused her of doing “nothing” to improve school choice.

Romero emphasized that in Harris’s hometown of Oakland, 75% of African American and Latino students cannot meet basic proficiency in reading and math. She further noted that Harris had sided with teachers’ unions to block reforms pushed by families seeking better educational opportunities.

Romero’s departure follows a similar move by California State Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil, who left the Democratic Party earlier in August, citing dissatisfaction with its leadership. “Blue California may be blue, but people are ready to vote for change and make America great again,” Romero added.
