A homeless man in Santa Monica broke into a woman’s home and assaulted her while she slept, according to police. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Anthony Townson, allegedly entered the residence through an unlocked second-floor patio door around 4 a.m. He reportedly fondled the woman and exposed himself before she managed to escape and call the police. Officers quickly apprehended Townson nearby.

Authorities charged him with felony residential burglary and indecent exposure during unlawful entry. Townson’s criminal record includes trespassing, battery on a police officer, drug-related offenses, and loitering on private property.

The incident adds to growing concerns among Santa Monica residents regarding crime committed by homeless individuals. In May, a homeless man attempted to drag a jogger into a public restroom by her ponytail, and in August, another allegedly assaulted a sunbather on the beach.

Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock told KTLA-TV that the city is overwhelmed by its homeless population, pleading for state and federal assistance. The city, known for its affluence, has a median home price of $1.7 million.
