An illegal immigrant, Gerber Luis Sanchez-Centeno, who was released by border agents, was arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, Dania Cruz-Mejia, in Maryland. Cruz-Mejia, 18, was found dead in her home on September 18, after family members became concerned when they hadn’t heard from her. Police arrested Sanchez-Centeno two days later and charged him with first-degree murder.

Sanchez-Centeno had illegally entered the U.S. weeks prior and was released under the Alternatives to Detention program, which included a GPS monitor. However, by August 8, authorities lost track of him after he absconded. Cruz-Mejia, a recent immigrant herself, had been studying cosmetology and learning English. Her family and teacher described her as a positive and eager student who loved life.
