A 17-year-old gang member convicted of a double murder in Los Angeles, Shanice Dyer, is accused of another killing just years after being released. Dyer, a member of the East Coast Crips, was originally charged with the murders of Alfredo Carrera and José Flores Velázquez, who had no gang affiliations but were killed for being in gang territory. Under former District Attorney Jackie Lacey, she was to be tried as an adult. However, when George Gascón took office in 2020, Dyer was tried as a juvenile and released after less than four years in custody.

Dyer is now accused of aiding in the murder of 21-year-old Joshua Streeter, who was gunned down in a Pomona parking lot. Critics argue this tragedy could have been prevented if Gascón’s policies had not allowed her early release. Michele Hanisee, President of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys, blasted Gascón for prioritizing criminal release over public safety, stating that Streeter’s death resulted directly from the District Attorney’s leniency.

A second attempt to recall Gascón failed in August 2022, leaving many in L.A. frustrated with his approach to violent crime.
