A reproductive rights group unveiled a giant inflatable IUD in front of Washington Union Station on Wednesday. The group, Americans for Contraception, aimed to encourage the Senate to pass the Right to Contraception Act.

Despite their efforts, the Senate did not advance the bill, which sought to codify nationwide access to contraceptives. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) proposed the legislation as part of the Democrats’ strategy to highlight reproductive care before the November elections.

The Right to Contraception Act fell short by a vote of 51-39, missing the required 60 votes to proceed. Democrats refuted claims of partisan maneuvering.

“This is not a show vote,” Schumer stated. “This is a show-us-who-you-are vote. The Republicans don’t want to show who they really are.”

Although the GOP has traditionally opposed abortion, former President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to adopt a less restrictive stance than other Republicans, potentially affecting the November presidential election.
