Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is introducing a dramatically different version of a classic character’s wife. Released in May 2024 by Rocksteady Studios, a Warner Bros. Games subsidiary, the game was a $200 million disaster. The studio reported a sharp decline in revenue from $607 million in Q1 2023 to $184 million in Q1 2024, a 70% drop. Despite this, the studio has not altered its approach.

Following the game’s poor performance, Warner Bros. Games launched a Women and Non-Binary Leadership Program, aiming to diversify the male-dominated industry, as reported by Built In.

Despite having fewer than 500 active players on Steam, according to PC Gamer, the game continues with Season 2. A new character, Mrs. Freeze, will debut. Traditionally, Mr. Freeze, a bald scientist, was portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1997 film “Batman & Robin.” Mrs. Freeze, typically shown as a blonde beauty, was played by model Vendela Kirsebom.

Rocksteady Studios has opted for a new depiction, presenting her as taking over her husband’s role. One gamer criticized the new design, likening it to a “non-binary Karen,” and accused the studio of viewing femininity as a societal threat. The short-haired portrayal suggests an alternate timeline or universe.

Recent revelations from video game artist Del Walker highlight the difficulty of depicting beautiful women in modern games. Walker, who has worked on Star Wars and Batman games, stated that his original concepts are often altered beyond recognition, stripping away beauty and changing characters’ entire likenesses and attitudes.

Gamers have noted similar trends in other games, such as the Star Wars Outlaws character modeled after Humberly González and the Perfect Dark remake, which hardened hero Joanna Dark’s jawline.

Despite backlash and calls for boycotts, Rocksteady Studios continues to adhere to its diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments, involving diversity consulting company Sweet Baby Inc. The game has faced significant criticism throughout its time on the market.
