A transgender inmate has been removed from a California women’s prison after being indicted for rape.

Tremaine Deon Carroll, 51, was transferred to a men’s prison facing two charges of rape and one of dissuading a witness from testifying, as reported by feminist news site Reduxx.

One alleged victim, Jane Doe, claims Carroll raped her in the shower at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, located 150 miles southeast of San Francisco. The criminal complaint mentions a second unnamed victim. Carroll is now at Valley State Prison, a male-only facility in Delano.

DailyMail.com previously spoke with Jane Doe, who described a ‘fully penetrative’ assault in January 2024. The attack left her traumatized, unable to shower for days, as basic hygiene triggers the memory of the assault.

Jane Doe, in her thirties and around five feet tall, was serving a short sentence for burglary. After requesting a cell change, she shared a cell with two female prisoners and Carroll, a self-identified transgender inmate.

Court documents reveal Carroll’s criminal history, including juvenile charges of theft and firearm possession in 1988 and 1989. In 1990, he was arrested for kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault of two women at gunpoint. Carroll pled guilty to two counts of kidnapping and received a 10-year sentence.

After his release, Carroll reoffended in 1998, resulting in a conviction for robbing a jewelry store. This crime triggered California’s ‘Three Strikes and You’re Out’ law, leading to a 25-year to life sentence. Carroll, now 51, stands 6ft 2in and weighs about 200lbs. In mugshots, Carroll sports thick black and grey stubble and identifies as a trans woman, though has not undergone sex reassignment surgery.

Jane Doe claims Carroll began expressing sexual interest in her immediately after moving cells, leaving flirtatious notes and propositions. She rejected all advances. Less than 24 hours later, she alleges Carroll raped her in the prison shower.

Sources told DailyMail.com that Jane Doe was hospitalized and kept in chains during a pelvic exam. After her release, she was segregated, strip-searched, and treated as if she were the predator because Carroll had alleged she was the rapist.

Carroll faces charges for two rapes, including the assault on Jane Doe and another unrelated assault, along with one charge of intimidating a witness.

Women’s rights advocates call these allegations a wake-up call for the California prison system, which has moved over 44 biological male prisoners into female facilities since 2021. Nearly 200 more transfer applications are under review.

A lawsuit by the Women’s Liberation Front (Wolf), a liberal feminist advocacy group, reveals that CCWF installed condom-dispensing machines after the law’s passage, which is not required for male inmates to transfer to female facilities.

On September 29, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed The Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act, allowing incarcerated transgender, non-binary, and intersex people to request housing consistent with their gender identity. To apply for a transfer, inmates need only declare their identity and receive approval from prison authorities.

In August 2021, Carroll was moved to CCWF after complaints of harassment by other detainees and claims of being sexually assaulted over 30 times. Once inside, Carroll became a notable figure in the state’s transgender inmate programs. Writing for a small news site in 2022, Carroll described being a ‘trans woman’ with a ‘girl’s heart and a confused mind.’
