A Venezuelan migrant, Kevin Perez-Paredes, has been charged with murder in Chicago after allegedly executing 25-year-old Crismer Nieves in broad daylight. According to prosecutors, Perez-Paredes chased down Nieves after an initial encounter at a gas station. Witnesses reported that Nieves, unarmed, begged for his life before Perez-Paredes shot him multiple times in the head and arm.

Surveillance footage and text messages support the charges, and police say Perez-Paredes has confessed. While his gang affiliation remains unclear, the case comes amid concerns about Venezuelan gangs like the Tren de Aragua (TdA), which Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently designated as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization.”

Governor Abbott’s action provides law enforcement with enhanced tools to combat TdA’s growing presence, and a $5,000 reward is offered for information on gang members involved in violent crimes.
